Great Pond Mountain

Great Pond Mountain Sustainable Single Track Project

Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust (GPM) holds 4,500 acres of land just outside of

Bucksport, Maine. PR NEMBA has been working with Great Pond Mountain to construct

singletrack mountain bike trails on their lands. This project will be an intermediate trail with

many interesting modern features to enhance rider experience. We want to bring some of the new flavor of mountain biking to an area that has very limited existing trails and that will serve as a great example for future trail development. We have approval to construct 3.7 miles of machine-built singletrack to the top of Great Pond Mountain and down the back

side. These lands are in very close proximity to Acadia National Park, America’s

fifth most visited National Park. GPM lands boast four mountain tops with spectacular views

of the surrounding areas including coastal Maine and the mountains of Acadia. GPM lands

are mostly closed to automobile traffic, have numerous trails and former 4WD roads, and

offers backcountry camping in lean-toos and primitive tent sites. Many brooks and streams

can be found all over the lands with excellent swimming in Craig Pond and Alamoosook Lake.

While the Great Pond Mountain “Wildlands” has many existing trails, paths, and

some dirt roads there are no modern singletrack trails for riders. The current hiking

trails that are accessible to bikes are heavily eroded and unusable by most user groups.

The type of trail PR NEMBA will bring to these lands will be a model for other areas on

how to properly construct modern mountain bike trails that are enjoyable for all users,

require very little maintenance, and will not erode.
